About SWARD

Who are we?

A residents’ group with a paid-up membership of over 280 households in Bishop’s Cleeve, Woodmancote, Stoke Orchard, Uckington, Elmstone Hardwicke, Brockhampton, Gotherington and Cheltenham.

SWARD was formed in 2001 when a local resident discovered that the landfill site adjacent to her home was being filled with hazardous waste. In particular, she was alerted to the presence of    fly ash, the by-product of Municipal Incinerators. She discovered that this waste was not only highly caustic but also contained traces of heavy metals such as antimony, arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, mercury not to mention the dioxins and furans.

She organised a public meeting in February 2001. From that meeting SWARD and has gone on from strength to strength.
