Local Waste Sites

In July 2004 new regulations governing landfill sites came into force. This brought to an end the co-disposal of hazardous and non-hazardous wastes sites and was intended to tighten up the way waste is dealt with.
There were just over 200 sites accepting hazardous waste of one form or another. Only 12  have  been given the necessary  permits to accept hazardous incinerator waste under the new regulations. Bishops Cleeve is now one of these remaining sites

According to Grundon’s Pollution Prevention and Control (PPC) permit, they can accept up to 120 000 tonnes of hazardous waste per year at Wingmoor Farm West.  Prior to 2004 they never accepted more than about half this figure.

This site already accepts a huge amount  of the Air Pollution Control Residues sent to landfill in the UK.    As new incinerators are built we will be the most likely dumping ground for the toxic residues.

This photograph was taken during our tour of the site on Grundon's open day in February 2004. The lighter grey at the top is the treated Air Pollution Control residues. This waste contains dioxins and heavy metals.

120 000 tonnes of hazardous waste per year is permitted to be buried here next to our villages.
